book for inspiration A List of Photographers That Inspired Other Photographers

Photographer Ron Reeves posted a question to the Photography Industry Professionals group on Linked-in, “What photographer (s) has inspired you to be a better Photographer? I am sharing with you some photographers mentioned by the respondents of discussion question. If photographers that inspires you are not mentioned in this article please list them for visitors viewing this article. The Photographers that inspired me to be a better Photographer are: Tuan Nguyen – For his passion and his eagerness  for knowledge. Scott Kelby – For being Scott Kelby; a gentleman, a business man, a family man and for giving so much back to the Photography Community. Chase Jarvis – I respect his hustle, his creativity and his passion for doing what he loves. Joe McNally – If I ever met my grandfather, I would have probably shook Joe McNally’s hand; he inspires me to learn/discover everything that is and that can be possible from truly understanding my camera. Timothy Keating – My former photography professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design; Professor Keating pushed me to keep on pushing.

The book ONE displayed above was given to me by a friend. The book shares a ton of great quotes about believing in yourself and the reasons why you should. (I will share the ones I like via My Tweets) Before I list the names of Photographers that inspired other Photographers, allow me to share with you the opening paragraph of the book ONE, “One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself or anyone else is inspiration. Inspiration to get in touch with your dreams. Inspiration to get in touch with your deepest passions. Inspiration to seek out your deepest passions. Inspiration to make a difference in the world, a difference that only you can make. This is not a book about success; it’s a book about significance. It’s not a book about making a living; it’s a book about making a life. It’s not about fame or acclaim; it’s about contribution and service. Instead of asking, “What can I get from life?” watch what happens when you ask, What can I give?

A special thank you to Ron Reeves for posting the question and thank you to the members of the Photography Industry Professionals for sharing the photographers that inspired you. (I am providing links for the websites that I found for the photographers. If you know the websites for the people not linked please include the link in the comment box with a photographer that inspires you.)

1. “Dennison Lee & Edna Fields for capturing people I know in ways that helped me understand that photography is a beautiful art. Tracy Kecther for capturing raw energy as displayed at concerts. Roy DeCarava for elevating familiar places and similar faces to the consciousness of the broader ‘art world’.”

- Dennis Lee Photography

- Tracy Ketcher

- Roy DeCarava

2. “Bill Brandt for his exceptional images of communities in London, and Jane Bown for her remarkable portraits, from Betjeman to George Bernard Shaw.”

- Bill Brandt

- Jane Bown

3. “Richard Avedon for his captivating presence and ability to show the true nature of the subjects he photographed. All black and white and raw. Nothing is better.”

- Richard Avedon

4. “Most recently Andrew Zuckerman for his projects called “bird” and “wisdom”"

- Andrew Zuckerman

5. “I have so many I don’t know where to start. Ansel Adams and Galen Rowell for my landscape work. Tyler Stableford. Bob Davis. Vincent Laforet because he always seems to be in the right place at the right time.”

- Ansel Adams

- Galen Rowell

- Tyler Stableford

- Vincent Laforet

6. “That’s easy. The late George DeGennaro, L.A. food photographer. In the late sixties he was shooting for LA Time’s Home magazine among other publications. His work always sparkled and I could tell he would always strive for a “wow” factor in….color…composition…lighting. I would clip every single shot in a long-gone scrapbook for reference and study. I was still in high school at the time and he’s the one who I can pin down as to who inspired me the most.

Interestingly, prior to when I joined Taco Bell as the Corporate Photographer in 1979, George was shooting all of the food for Taco Bell. I took over George’s role in-house, but later, I did work with him once when I was an Art Director and he shot some gorgeous product shots for us. Of course, I was thrilled to be working with him. He was a true master and still inspires me today with his images I have in my memory.”

7. “Its amazing to hear all these photographers names. Some I have never heard of. I cant wait to look up all these new names. I recently looked at a photography book by Richard Sexton and was blown away by his ability to capture the perfect light and keep detail in every aspect of his highlights.”

- Richard Sexton

8. “Just about every time someone names a photographer I go yeah, him/her too. I’m inspired by the photographers that developed their skills to the utmost, who labor to give the world a memorable image. Photographers who can see the world like no one else, who have an eye and a vision, creative, an understanding of the human condition, a oneness with the landscape around them, a love for the people they photograph.” My photography teacher Cherie Hiser taught me that being moved by a photograph or photographer’s work moved us and inspired us to take photographs with the same passion. If it moves you; you move. It meant that if I’m inspired by it then that same passion is within me. (Wow, that’s kind of heavy, huh?)”

- Cherie Hiser

9. “…The Image is Important as much as the Vision of that Photographers eye! But the ones that are inspiring to me start with Irving Penn. Andre Kertesz, Halsman, Helmut Newton, Elgort. Weber, But each have a style all of there own. And that’s what i love about photography…”

- Irving Penn

- Andre Kertesz

- Halsman

- Helmut Newton

- Elgort

10. “Jay Maisel, Gregory Heisler, Jodi Cobb, David Burnett, William Albert Allard, Arthur Meyerson, and Arnold Newman. And if I’m shooting around other photographers , my competitive nature makes me worker harder, think differently. and try to make better photos than they’ll get.”

- Jay Maisel

- Gregory Heisler

- Jodi Cobb

- David Burnett

- William Albert Allard

- Arthur Meyerson

- Arnold Newman

Well that’s one large list of photographers, and they all seem to have lots of experience with Photography and lots of passion for what they love.

Chase Jarvis has always been a favorite of mine, especially for his creativity in his pictures, and I would love to go into the same direction as him.

Keep up the good work Dwayne!

@AodanMoorhouse Thank you; Chase is a good, very creative as well I like his work because I see it and it’s like why didn’t I think of that first then makes me want to push harder. Every artist is different and I love what he is doing.
