Miami Late Night Black and White Ocean View

Help me decided which one I should print? I photographed this image last week one night out of my many late nights awake in Miami, Florida. It’s the view from my  Miami flat. I will post the west-side view next Monday here on Photography For You.

To photograph this image I used the Nikon D200 with a 18-200mm VR Lens, a tripod and left the shutter open for 25 seconds. With the shutter opened as long allows more light into the camera ; with the appropriate F Stop you can capture and image similar at night. Remember the lower the F Stop (example F Stop 2.8) gives lets more light into the camera, it’s like your eyes wide open. If you squint it’s like a higher F stop (example F22). Find the balance that gives you the best results, it’s not hard to photograph like this at night. Give it a try!

I am happy I have this photograph to keep with me forever because I will look back at my past someday, and this photograph printed in one of my homes will help me remember the late nights and hard work I put forward.

I was about to start the second part of The Blast Tour this night; I changed my mind because it didn’t feel like the right time but I will keep you updated with that. The book of the first location in Savannah is on it’s way!!! So which one should I print large, the photograph in color or the photograph in black and white?

I like the color one. There’s so many colors in that one and you really don’t get that from the black and white one.

Definitely the B&W, which I understand is contrary to what most of your other respondents say.

B&W because of the lines and the time of night the image was shot. Perhaps colour had it been shot at dusk with still a bit of light in the sky but because the sky is black, the contrast with the light/lines is much more interesting in the B&W… more abstract. Our brains think in colour so with the B&W, it’s more about the lines and less about the scene/view. There isn’t really one particular thing your eye focusses on in the shot so as a whole, I find the B&W more appealing.

the black and white has a greater sense of depth, because there is no distraction with colour.

Artvers!

I want to thank you all for helping me choose the color image. I just want to make a few points to answer things mentioned about the photographs. Before I get to that I am reflecting to the point of this photograph.

I photographed this image from my balcony as mentioned in the write-up, because I wanted an image to remind me of the late nights I spent up here in Miami.

It was a quick set up of the tripod, placing the camera, then photographing the image so I can freeze the moment; then I went back to working.

I chose the color version to be printed, now I will be able to work on it in Photoshop, quickly used the clone-stamp tool to remove a few spots and fixed the white balance briefly in Lightroom.

My reasoning for considering the black and white version is because I’m freezing a piece of time that will bring back many feelings and by removing its color I can help save the ‘old time ago’ feeling.

This photograph was NOT to be entered for a prize piece or to be published as a famous photograph by Dwayne. It’s for my personal memory of my apartment that will hang in my homes.

Again thank you!

DT.
